Fr Richard Charrette, son of Dennis Charrette and Geraldine LaPorte born Sept 30, 1940 in Hay Twp, Huron Co.
Attended local (public) schools (we were outside the then 3-mile limit, and , of course, there were no buses then) # 11 Hay and South Huron District High School in Exeter ON in 1954. In 1959, I entered St Peter's Seminary London. Was ordained to the priesthood May 29, 1966 by Bishop Emmett Carter in St Peter`s Cathedral, London ON. Assigned to Holy Cross Parish as assistant, London ON from Sept 1966 to April 1967. Attended Harvard Summer School in 1966 and 1967 for studies in biblical Hebrew and Greek, as well as Waterloo Lutheran University, Waterloo ON, again for further Hebrew studies in May-June, 1967. Went to Lyon, France, attended Les facultés catholiques de Lyon Oct 1967 to June 1968, to earn a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, June 1968. Studied German in July-Aug 1968 at the Geothe Institut in Passau, Germany July -Aug 1968 (then required for biblical studies). Returned to Canada in Sept 1968, remaining in Quebec where I taught for 6 years. Returned to Ontario in June 1974. Worked at Divine Word Centre on staff as assistant to Fr Marcel Gervais for 3 years. In Jan, 1977, appointed to Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish and Precious Blood Mission & St Peter`s Mission, until June 1979. In July 1979 to June 1980, returned to Divine Word Centre to assist Fr Gervais in writing the Journey Bible Program. June 1980, appointed to Sacred Heart Parkhill Parish and St Columba Mission until June 1983. June 1983 until Sept 1985, appointed pastor at the parish of L'Assomption, Stoney Point. Sept 1983 until June 1988, various special programs and courses in Toronto and Spokane, Washington, including STM degree at Regis Jesuit College in Toronto and a hospital CPE (Clinical-Pastoral -Education) course at Toronto General Hospital. July 1988 until June 1992, appointed pastor at St Joseph`s Parish, River Canard. June 1992 until June 2003, appointed pastor of St Thomas Aquinas Parish, Sarnia. June 2003 until June 2006, appointed pastor of Sacred Heart, Langton (near Tillsonburg) and St Ladislaus Hungarian Parish, Courtland. June 2006, appointed to the staff of St Peter`s Seminary in London to teach Sacred Scripture, until 2013. At the same time, appointed as chaplain to the francophone community of St Marguerite d'Youville in London, until retirement from parish responsibilities in 2010. He continued to teach at St Peter`s Seminary until April 2013, with continuing tutoring of students needing to catch up on courses until Sept 2014. Nov 2010, appointed chaplain to the St Joseph Sisters, London, until today, with added teaching responsibilities for Scripture sessions to the Precious Blood sisters in London. |
